In
April 2001, the SXM Link was founded. Dedicated to helping SXM students
survive overseas, South Florida has one of the largest and biggest
delegation of SXM students studying, so membership was not a problem.
The biggest problem, for the board of SXM Link, was the conversion
of being an island organization and a continental organization.
Having an organization is not bad at all, but having one, in a country
where many international students are not allowed to work, have
no income, depend solely on their parents, live hours away from
each other, and no vehicle, this was the toughest part. However,
trying makes perfect. We have had 2 events for the year. Presently,
we're gathering contact info, from all SXM students in Florida,
so by 2002, we can start assisting SXM students coming to Florida.
We
have many events plan to help sxm student enjoy their studies away,
but the main purpose of gathering and informing sxm students will
always be carried out. The main board is located in downtown Miami.
Other sxm student have already should interested in other states
and we are looking to form other chapters soon in areas, such as
Rhode Island, Canada and much more. An sxm link website and sxm
students chat room is in the works. The organization is still in
the early stages, so gathering sxm student is the top priority right
now, then organizing much more events will come into play. We are
also making a sxm database which students can go online and find
the picture and contact info of any sxm person, who is they want
to find.
Many
miss the soca tunes, the beaches, cooling out on front street, zouk
clubs, Johnny cake with salt fish and much more things, that cannot
be found any where in the world in a wonderful combination by on
the st.maarten soil. Sxm link will do it's best, to bring the feeling
to your home away form home.
